Cavers

Cavers is a Year 1 and 2 class consisting of 10 lovely students. Cavers is a vibrant, lively and active class where the children predominately follow the EYFS and KS1 curriculum which is adapted to each of the individual’s needs. The curriculum is taught through topics, based on the Cornerstones curriculum. We use the topics to teach in a creative and engaging way to help capture the children’s attention and help them connect their skills and understanding throughout the different aspects of their life. We use  students are taught skills to help them become more independent.

There is a class teacher and 3 specialist support assistants in Cavers Class who all attend to the varying needs of the individual students. We use a range of communication methods to ensure that all children can communicate. These include, PECs, Makaton and augmented language aids such as switches.  Each child follows their own individual learning plan and are assessed using these in conjunction with our whole school assessment tool.

The children are grouped across KS1 for phonics, where we follow an adapted version of Read, Write, inc. We have some focused learning taking place in a variety of situations, whole class, group and 1:1. The children are also given free time to practice the skills they have learnt throughout the topic such as fine motor skills, counting and sequencing or reading. The children also have both KS1 and sensory drama lessons, led by a creative arts lead teacher. We have art in a specially equipped art studio, access to rebound therapy and forest school.
