Pioneers

Pioneers is a Key Stage 3 class, with ages ranging from 11-13. The classroom provides a bright, pupil-friendly and stimulating environment, where learning takes a topic-based approach (Cornerstones) whilst also focusing on functional maths and English skills alongside more vocational life skills topics through the ASDAN accreditation.

Lessons take place in whole class format, small group work 1:1 sessions and for phonics and maths groups the whole of the senior classes are streamed and work in ability groups to ensure that learning is relevant and there is progressing in these key areas. All students follow programmes of work designed to meet their individual needs, learning through creative and practical activities across the curriculum.

Communication in class is varied and inclusive thus we use a range of strategies to ensure that everyone has a voice. These strategies include speech, Makaton Signing, PODD, P.E.C.S, symbols, photographs, and Objects of Reference. All Students are encouraged to be as independent as they possibly can be, and where appropriate, are encouraged to develop their physical skills and take responsibility for meeting their personal care and/or health needs.  As a department we are often out in the community and enjoy swimming, riding, and outreach activities with the local secondary schools as part of our learning.
